Regional Skilled Category
On 23 March 2004, the Australian Government announced a new visa for skilled migrants who are prepared to live and work in regional Australia. The new visa will be available from 1 July 2004 for applicants who satisfy the (existing) basic requirements for skilled migration. However applicants will only be required to meet a lower points test of 110 if proceeding under this category. All other basic visa criteria remain the same.
This new Skilled Regional visa will result in the issue of a 3-year temporary residence visa for applicants who undertake to live in regional areas. After living in a regional area for at least 2 years, applicants are then eligible to apply for permanent residence.

On 1 April 2004, the Minister for Immigration & Multicultural & Indigenous Affairs announced a increase to the pass mark for the Skilled Independent category. The pass mark is currently 115 but all applications lodged on or after 14 April 2004 must satisfy the new pass mark of 120.
There are some transitional provisions in place for overseas students currently studying in Australia. Please contact us to discuss this matter further.
